Frequently Asked
Questions
Q. How can I tell if I need a new mattress?
A. If your bed is over 10 years old or if you are not enjoying
a deep restful sleep each night, then it is probably time to
change your mattress.
Q. How long should my mattress last?
A. As a rule, your mattress should be well and truly retired after
15 to 20 years. However industry standards suggest that a mattress
of 8 to 10 years of age is probably due for changing. There are
several factors which impact on the life of the mattress such
as the weight of the user and the amount of usage. Regular rotation
of the mattress will prolong its life.
Q. What are the different quilted finishes and which should I
choose?
A. The quilted finishes available offer various levels of plushness
and firmness. If the quilting pattern is smaller in size, a firmer
feel will result and, in contrast, a larger pattern will usually
feel plusher.
Q. Does a mattress have to be firm for a good night's sleep?
A. No. The quality and construction of the spring unit within the
mattress and base provides the support necessary to maintain
the spine's alignment. Mattress firmness varies with different
manufacturers. A mattress that gives you proper support will
give you a better night's sleep regardless of how soft or hard
it is.
What the experts say .... Richard D. Guyer, MD Associates Professor
of Orthopedics: "I always recommend to my patients that they
choose either the middle or upper middle of the line mattress .
The firmest mattress is not necessarily the best, but one of the
upper line mattresses will give more than adequate support."
Q. Why do I need to rotate my mattress and how often should I
do it?
A. We turn a mattress to minimize the effect of the indentations
our sleeping body leaves in the layers of the upholstery. Manufacturers
usually recommend that you turn your mattress every two weeks in
the first three months then, once every two months thereafter.
Remember that the handles are not intended to be used for turning;
only use them to position the mattress on the base.
